generated by TagDiv Composer *\/\n.vc_column_text > .td-element-style{\r\n\t\t\t\t\tz-index: -1;\r\n\t\t\t\t}\n<\/style><div class=\"td-fix-index\"><p><strong>Why are asylum seekers held on Manus and Nauru?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Manus Island and Nauru first became the locations for Australia\u2019s offshore immigration detention centres in 2001, when former Prime Minister John Howard launched the \u201cPacific Solution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Labor reopened them in 2012 as part of a plan to prevent any asylum seeker arriving by boat from gaining resettlement in Australia. Nauru is 3000 kilometres from the Australian mainland, while Manus Island lies 300 kilometres north of the main island of Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still refugees left in Nauru and PNG<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By December 2022, there were 77 refugees and asylum seekers left on Nauru. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/22\/first-refugees-from-nauru-to-be-resettled-in-new-zealand-arrive-nine-years-after-deal-offered\">first six went to New Zealand<\/a> under the resettlement deal agreed in the dying days of the Morrison government in November 2022. Others have gained resettlement in Canada and the US.<\/p>\n<p>There are also around 1200 refugees who were detained on Manus and Nauru now in Australia, after arriving for medical treatment including under the Medevac law. This is one third of the entire number originally sent offshore. They have been refused permanent resettlement, and told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/ripped-apart-refugee-to-fight-forced-resettlement-20221003-p5bmvs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Australia is not an option for you&#8221;<\/a> even though some have been here as long as nine years, and have children in school and made lives here. They need permanent visas to allow them to stay here.<\/p>\n<p>Around another 92 refugees are left in PNG, dumped in Port Moresby in 2019 after the closure of the Manus Island detention centre. Australia abandoned them and declared them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2021\/oct\/06\/australia-to-end-offshore-processing-in-papua-new-guinea\">officially the responsibility of the PNG government in 2019<\/a>. They still need resettlement too. Some may get to New Zealand under a separate deal with the government there, but their future remains uncertain. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/what-will-happen-to-the-asylum-seekers-who-australia-refused-to-let-in\/5er5c9twl\">continue to face the threat of attacks and robbery<\/a> in a dangerous situation while in PNG. The Australian government should accept responsibility and bring them here for resettlement urgently too.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_wrapper wpb_text_column td_block_wrap td_block_wrap vc_column_text tdi_11  tagdiv-type td-pb-border-top td_block_template_9\"  data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_11\" ><div class=\"td-fix-index\"><p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Where have they been resettled?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Refugees have spent almost ten years in limbo as a result of Australia&#8217;s offshore detention policy. Efforts to resettle them in third countries have been appallingly slow and difficult, with most countries rejecting Australia&#8217;s efforts to abuse human rights and keep out refugees.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016 a resettlement deal was stuck where the US agreed to take 1250 of the refugees on Nauru and Manus Island. The first refugees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2017\/sep\/27\/first-nauru-refugees-leave-for-us-resettlement\">were resettled in late 2017<\/a>, after more than four years of detention. But six years after the deal was first announced some refugees approved under the deal are still waiting to go to the US. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.au\/operation-sovereign-borders-offshore-detention-statistics\/4\/\">At 30 November 2022, 1075 had been resettled there<\/a> with around 200 others approved to go.<\/p>\n<p>Others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2021\/may\/21\/more-than-140-refugees-in-australian-detention-set-to-be-resettled-in-canada-under-sponsorship-scheme\">have gone to Canada<\/a> under a sponsorship scheme, which required supporters in Australia and Canada to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-08-14\/operation-not-forgotten-australians-100k-refugees-to-canada\/11408480\">fundraise around $18,000 per refugee<\/a> to have them accepted.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2022, a deal with finally agreed with New Zealand, which agreed to take 150 refugees over three years. But less than 40 refugees from Nauru will end up in New Zealand, with most already heading to the US or Canada. The bulk of the places in New Zealand will go to refugees from offshore detention now in Australia, who were transferred for medical care or under the Medevac law. Most of them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/sep\/30\/australia-new-zealand-refugee-deal-un-criticises-canberra-after-just-36-people-take-up-offer\">do not want to go to New Zealand<\/a>, having already lived in Australia for years. The process will also take three more years, when they have waited almost ten years already, and there are not enough places for all of them, with 505 to miss out.<\/p>\n<p>The attempt to send refugees to Cambodia in 2015 was also farcical. Just seven were \u201cresettled\u201d there, at a cost of $55 million. Only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-05-25\/third-refugee-reportedly-resettled-nauru-to-cambodia\/8559794\">three remain there<\/a>\u00a0as of May 2017, with the others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/remaining-two-refugees-in-cambodia-rue-leaving-nauru-20160311-gnh7mo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regretting the decision to go to Cambodia<\/a> and returning home in despair. Cambodia is one of the world\u2019s least developed countries and has no infrastructure for resettlement. It is also guilty of refoulement: in 2009, it deported two Uighur refugees seeking asylum back to China, the country they fled. The Philippines has also refused to accept refugees from Manus or Nauru. Kyrgyzstan was even floated as an option.<\/p>\n<p>The asylum seekers and refugees must be brought to Australia, the country the whole world views as responsible for them.
