\u201cThe High Court decision has given the government the opportunity to end the race to the bottom with the Liberals on refugee policy. Following the Liberals\u2019 policy of offshore processing has been a disaster for asylum seekers and it has been a disaster for Labor.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is time for the government to end their push for third country processing, and end offshore processing \u2013 including Christmas Island.<\/p>\n
\u201cRepeating the line about ending \u2018the people smugglers\u2019 business model\u2019 is not only unconvincing \u2013 it is self-defeating. It is time to put the rights of asylum seekers at the front of government policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are sick of asylum seekers being a political football. Latest polls show a majority in favour of processing asylum claims in Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cCalls for humanitarian policies on both offshore processing and mandatory detention are coming from whistle blowers in detention, and institutions such as ACOSS, the Australian Medical Association, St Vincent de Paul, the ACTU, as well as business leaders like Heather Ridout.<\/p>\n
\u201cA small amount of political leadership is all that\u2019s needed,\u201d said Rintoul.<\/p>\n
