A Kurdish man at Darwin detention centre, who was accepted as a refugee two months ago, supposedly under 24 hour suicide watch by Serco guards has managed to lock his door and severely self-harm at around 11.30 pm Thursday night.<\/p>\n
Police and an ambulance team were called to the north one compound. It was 12.30am before Serco forced the door to find the man had cut his stomach.<\/p>\n
The man was taken to the detention medical centre but his condition is not known.<\/p>\n
The man is one of at least four in north one compound who are supposedly under 24 hour surveillance by Serco guards.<\/p>\n
\u201cSerco\u2019s system of suicide-watch is a complete fiasco. It is not about suicide prevention, it is about management damage control. Their system of constant supervision and confinement is more likely to exacerbate their suicidal feelings,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the revelation on the Four Corners program and a week after the tragic suicide of a Tamil refugee at Villawood, neither Serco nor the Immigration department have learned anything. Another man has been accepted as a refugee has been driven to self-harm and attempted suicide in the Darwin detention.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is the detention system that is causing the mental health crisis across the detention regime. The people who have been found to be refugees much be released. ASIO has stated publicly that they do not require people to be in immigration detention while they make their security assessments.\u201d<\/p>\n
