A suicide attempt at the Darwin detention centre by a Rohingyan asylum seeker was only narrowly averted overnight.<\/p>\n
The man was already hanging when found by other asylum seekers, who managed to get the man down despite his struggles, around 9.15 pm, Sunday night, Darwin time.<\/p>\n
Police and ambulance officers were called to the centre. The man was taken to the medical centre with neck injuries. His condition is not known.<\/p>\n
The Rohingyan man has been in detention for seven months, and is still waiting for an answer to his initial refugee assessment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe attempted suicide was a very close call. Urgent intervention is needed at the Darwin detention centre. Every day reveals another casualty of mandatory detention.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd there is still no sign of the Minister making good on his claimed intention to use bridging visas to release people into the community while their claims are being processed, \u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n
