{"id":16668,"date":"2023-02-13T11:52:26","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T00:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=16668"},"modified":"2023-02-13T11:52:43","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T00:52:43","slug":"permanent-visas-welcome-but-labor-must-end-limbo-for-all-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=16668","title":{"rendered":"Permanent visas welcome but Labor must end limbo for all refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-02-12\/refugees-visa-temporary-protection-labor-election-promise\/101963764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-awaited announcement that Labor will at long last grant permanent visas to 19,000 refugees surviving on temporary visas (TPVs and SHEVs)<\/a> is a welcome step to fulfilling their election promises to people seeking asylum and refugees. But much more is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While 19,000 refugees will now be eligible for permanent visas, Labor has not abolished TPVs and SHEVs as promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no announcement about the fate of the 10,000 rejected under Morrison\u2019s fast track refugee assessment process although Labor promised to abolish fast track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while the asylum seekers who arrived by boat after July 2013 but were not sent offshore will be eligible for permanent visas, those who were sent offshore but are now in Australia will not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we welcome today\u2019s announcement, Labor must end the limbo for all refugees and asylum seekers,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition, \u201cThe contradictions in Labor\u2019s policies must be urgently addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In making today\u2019s announcement, Immigration Minister Andrew Giles said that \u201cWithout permanent visas however, [those on TPVs and SHEVS] have been unable to get a loan to buy a house, build their businesses or pursue further education.\u00a0It makes no sense \u2014 economically or socially \u2014 to keep them in limbo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt makes no sense for Labor to leave the thousands of others \u2013 asylum seekers rejected by fast track, and the refugees from Nauru in and PNG, in limbo, but they have,\u201d said Rintoul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor\u2019s piecemeal approach will only add to the distress of some refugees on TPVs.
