{"id":16879,"date":"2026-03-26T11:32:29","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T00:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=16879"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:32:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T00:32:31","slug":"refugee-advocates-demand-open-the-borders-to-iranians-end-labors-shameful-iranian-visa-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=16879","title":{"rendered":"Refugee advocates demand \u201copen the borders\u201d to Iranians: end Labor\u2019s shameful Iranian visa ban"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cDetain, Deter, Deny\u201d were the infamous slogans that described Australia\u2019s refugee policy under the equally infamous leadership of John Howard and Philip Ruddock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke\u2019s announcement that Australia will impose a six-month ban on entry from Iran temporary tourist visa holders is a shameful continuation of a \u201cdeter and deny\u201d policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a far cry from Bob Hawke\u2019s granting asylum to thousands of Chinese in Australia when the Tiananmen Square massacre took place in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Labor government is deliberately denying the possibility of asylum to people who might desperately need it.&nbsp; It is a repeat of the Australian governments\u2019 refusal to process Iraqi refugee claims in 2003 because the US invasion was going to bring democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor\u2019s \u2018control determination order\u2019 is callous in the extreme,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition, \u201cAnd it continues Labor\u2019s efforts to undermine human rights of asylum seekers and the refugee convention.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Donald Trump deporting Iranians back to Iran late last year, the Australian government attempted to remove an Afghan asylum seeker to Iran just before the US bombing started.&nbsp; One Iranian mother of an Australian citizen was turned around at the Brisbane airport just before the bombing because Border Force deemed her an asylum risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDeport\u201d could be now added to \u201c\u201dDetain, Deny, Deter\u201d since the government has given itself powers to remove refugees and other non-citizens to what is effectively indefinite detention on Nauru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are around 82 of Iranians in Australian detention. They should all be released.&nbsp; Hundreds of Iranian asylum seekers are also in Indonesia trapped by Australia\u2019s 2014 ban on accepting refugees from Indonesia.&nbsp; They should all be brought to Australia, as should the Iranians still being held in PNG,\u201d said Rintoul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIranians who were brought to Australia after being detained on Manus and Nauru in 2013 are still being denied permanent visas.
