Despite the announcement that refugee assessments could start with the next two weeks, protests by asylum seekers on Nauru continue. One asylum seeker still has his lips stitched, while around 20 people remain on hunger strike \u2013 some since 19 February \u2013 24 days.<\/p>\n
The evening mass protests also continue to be a daily event.<\/p>\n
Yesterday (Thursday 14 March), one asylum seeker attempted to hang himself and has now joined another three or four asylum seekers in the Nauru hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day there is something here \u2013 people cut themselves or hang themselves,\u201d the Refugee Action Coalition was told from Nauru.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are very angry,\u201d the Nauru asylum seeker said. \u201cWe are not happy about the interviews. We had interviews months ago but now we are told they were for nothing. Are these interviews for nothing? What will happen in six months?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are asking Australia for protection. Why have we been brought to Nauru?\u201d<\/p>\n
