{"id":3768,"date":"2015-02-12T09:58:27","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T22:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=3768"},"modified":"2015-02-12T09:58:27","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T22:58:27","slug":"human-rights-commission-inquiry-damns-nauru-not-fit-for-children-not-fit-for-anyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=3768","title":{"rendered":"Human Rights Commission inquiry damns Nauru not fit for children; not fit for anyone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Human Rights Commission inquiry has revealed shocking details of the detention conditions on Nauru.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of water, the lack of basic clothing and shoes, the lack of proper education facilities; all of this reveals a detention regime in which children are simply pawns of government policy,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Justice-Nauru.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3769\" title=\"Justice Nauru\" src=\"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Justice-Nauru-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Justice-Nauru-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Justice-Nauru.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt is absurd for the Attorney-General Senator Brandis to deny the obvious &#8211; that the government is in breach of its international obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child,\u201d said Rintoul. &#8220;It seems the government has learned nothing from its &#8216;near death experience&#8217; &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government\u2019s own submission to the inquiry states, \u2018\u2026the Australian Government\u2019s view is that in making the decision [to transfer to Nauru], the best interests of such children are outweighed by other primary considerations.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children and their families detained on Nauru are as much the responsibility of Australia as those still detained in mainland detention centres. They are the victims of the deal done with the Palmer United Party Senators who supported the re-introduction of temporary protection visas last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were arbitrarily selected for transfer to Nauru. The inquiry reveals that the \u2018pre-transfer assessment process\u2019 and the \u201cbest interests assessment\u201d are a farce.
