{"id":4707,"date":"2016-02-21T20:32:17","date_gmt":"2016-02-21T09:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=4707"},"modified":"2016-02-21T20:32:17","modified_gmt":"2016-02-21T09:32:17","slug":"people-power-wins-community-detention-asha-now-free-267","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/?p=4707","title":{"rendered":"People power wins community detention for Asha: Now free all the 267"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Refugee Action Coalition welcomes the agreement to place baby Asha\u00a0in community detention as a victory for people power and the \u201cLet Them\u00a0Stay\u201d campaign on behalf of the 267 asylum seekers from Nauru and\u00a0Manus Island presently in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one small step for one family. We want to applaud the\u00a0hospital and its staff for the stand they took to defend the safety\u00a0and welfare of baby Asha,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the\u00a0Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir stand and the support from other hospitals and medical staff\u00a0will make it easier for other workers and staff to take a similar\u00a0stand in support of the 267 threatened with return to Nauru.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Peter Dutton can grant community detention for Asha and her\u00a0family, then it is possible to agree that all those threatened with\u00a0return to Nauru can be freed into the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we note that Peter Dutton insists they are are still under\u00a0threat of being returned to Nauru. We still need an ironclad\u00a0guarantee that Asha and her family will not be returned to Nauru.<\/p>\n<p>While there is a 72 hour undertaking of notice before any attempt to\u00a0remove Asha to Nauru, a future decision about whether she would be\u00a0moved would be entirely up to IHMS and the\u00a0Immigration department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We remain determined to ensure that Asha and the 267 get an ironclad\u00a0guarantee of no return to Nauru,&#8221; said Rintoul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still a question mark over the fate of all of the 267 men ,\u00a0women, and children who need to know that they will not be returned to\u00a0Nauru or Manus Island. Until there is a positive decision about the\u00a0267, the campaign to Let Them Stay will continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response in Brisbane has been tremendous, and is a very strong\u00a0indication that movement to \u2018Let Them Stay\u2019 is gaining increasing\u00a0community and worker support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People power has won a small step for Asha &#8211; now we need to step up\u00a0the Let Them Stay campaign.<\/p>\n<p>NO THIRD COUNTRIES &#8211; BRING THEM ALL TO AUSTRALIA<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe efforts of the Australian government to find third countries\u00a0willing to take refugees from Nauru and Manus is doomed,&#8221; said Ian\u00a0Rintoul, \u201cIt is more shabby politicking by the government to involved<br \/>\nrelatively poor neighbouring countries in undermining the refugee\u00a0convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe international community rightly regards the refugees on Manus and\u00a0Nauru as being Australia\u2019s responsibility. The government is just\u00a0delaying the inevitable.
