The man was struck across the top of the head by a machete, while the attacking Nauruans said, \u201cFuck refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/machete1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4767\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4767\" src=\"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/machete1.jpg\" alt=\"machete1\" width=\"270\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/machete1.jpg 440w, https:\/\/refugeeaction.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/machete1-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>The Iranian man was left with a deep head wound that required 8 stitches (see photo).<\/p>\n<p>The following night, Sunday, 6 March, locals returned to attack the accommodation at Nibok that the man shares with his wife.<\/p>\n<p>The husband and wife barricaded themselves inside their accommodation and screamed for help, as the attackers yelled, \u201cFuck refugees. We will kill you.\u201d Other refugees in the area rallied to support the couple.<\/p>\n<p>Nauruan police were called but they took one and a half hours to attend to the scene of the attack. Police told the refugees there was nothing they could do.<\/p>\n<p>Now the couple are living in fear of a further attack. Neither the police nor Immigration or Connect will provide a guard for their accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot sleep for fear we will be attacked again,\u201d the victim\u2019s wife told the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unprovoked attack once again reveals both the real danger and the complete absence of official willingness to protect refugees on Nauru. The lack of security at Nibok and other camps on Nauru leaves refugees open to attack,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>The Nibok attack comes at the same time as reports of growing numbers of both thefts and incidents of Nauruans armed with knives threatening refugees at the Fly Camp that accommodates single men.<\/p>\n<p>The dangers for refugees on Nauru form the backdrop to the on-going \u201cLet Them Stay\u201d campaign calling on the Turnbull government to allow the 267 asylum seekers presently in Australia from Nauru and Manus Island, to remain in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no prospect for enduring protection or care for asylum seekers and refugees on Nauru,\u201d said Rintoul, \u201cThe 267 must be allowed to stay and the camps must be closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information contact Ian Rintoul 0417 275 713<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 34-year-old Iranian refugee on Nauru was savagely attacked by two Nauruans on Saturday night, 5 March, around 10pm.
