This session will discuss what is happening with the US deal, why this won\u2019t end offshore detention and the current situation in Australia\u2019s offshore camps.<\/p>\n<p>2.30pm-3.45pm <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>From Malcolm Fraser to today: Refugee policy\u2014what are the alternatives?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Vivian Honan<\/strong> (Indonesian department, Sydney Uni on Malcolm Fraser\u2019s refugee policy and the Galang camp that house Vietnamese refugees in Indonesia)<\/p>\n<p>Both major parties remain committed to deterrence policies and the need to \u201cstop the boats\u201d. Malcolm Fraser\u2019s response to the Vietnamese refugee crisis is often held up as a model for welcoming refugees. Annual intake was higher than today, but premised on stopping boats coming to Australia.
