\"\"<\/a>A group of Iranian asylum seekers stranded in Jakarta held a protest outside the Iranian embassy yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon.<\/p>\n

Another group of asylum seekers in Makassar were denied permission to hold a protest; authorities even threatened to arrest any asylum seekers who held a demonstration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to hold a peaceful gathering to allow us to support our fellow Iranians, our friends and relatives who are being murdered by the regime in Iran,\u201d one of the organisers in Indonesia told the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n

The protest has highlighted the plight of Iranian and other asylum seekers and refugees in Indonesia: Australia has banned any intake of UNHCR refugees from Indonesia since 2014.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cThe repression in Iran demands an urgent response from the Australian government to reconsider all Iranian claims for protection in Australia. We are calling on the Australian government to immediately allow residency for all Iranian asylum seekers in the community and for those who are in detention in Australia and Manus and Nauru,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are even more urgent reasons for action in regard to Iranian families that the Australian government has deliberately separated between Nauru and Australia. They are not only victims of repression in Iran, they are now subject to a Trump travel ban. Those separated families \u2013 mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters – should be immediately united.<\/p>\n

“This kind of action would provide real support for those fighting for freedom and facing threats of the death penalty in Iran. ”<\/p>\n
