A public forum organised by the Refugee Action Coalition
Speakers:
Riz Wakil (Afghan refugee, former Curtin detainee)
Aaron Hulse (Get Up! campaign director)
Amnesty International speaker
Refugee Action Coalition speaker
As the federal election approaches, the major parties are engaged in a bidding war about who can be “toughest” on refugees. Julia Gillard’s replacement of Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister shows no sign of ending this–in fact she is moving to emphasise further Labor’s ability to “protect the borders”. The Labor government’s visa freeze has led to the re-opening of some of Howard’s notorious desert detention centres, including Curtin in WA. This forum will discuss the government’s hardening of refugee policy, and what can be done to stop the renewed spread of fear and hysteria about refugees.
