Nauru hunger striker hospitalised after 36 days: urgent action needed

A urgent message from Nauru reports that Omid, the Iranian asylum seeker on his 36th day of hunger strike has been shifted from the camp to the Nauru hospital. He was moved from the camp around 3.30pm after he began excreting blood.

Concerns over Omid’s welfare has raised tensions in the Nauru camp.

“We are gravely concerned for Omid, and are urging the Minister to urgently intervene. It may be that Omid has already suffered permanent organ damage,” said Ian Rintoul, from the Refugee Action Coalition.

“The Minister says he opened Nauru because he was concerned about the loss of life at sea. He literally holds the power of life or death of at least one asylum seeker on Nauru. Is he going to turn a blind eye to one life that he could save?”
