As the federal election looms, with Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott locked in a race to the bottom on refugee policy, it is more important than ever that we take to the streets to say no more! We will not go quietly as the major parties drag us back to the dark ages of racist fear-mongering that characterised the Howard years. Refugees are desperate people fleeing shocking conditions of war and persecution. Australia should be rolling out the red carpet for these refugees, not adding to their trauma and misery through mandatory detention, offshore processing and possible deportation back to torture or death.
