Free the Nauru asylum seekers: Don’t let Omid die

Protest today (Wednesday) and Friday

Sydney refugee supporters are holding two protest actions this week to counter the lies of the Immigration Department and to call for the Immigration Minister Chris Bowen to immediately intervene to prevent the death of Omid, the 35 year old Iranian asylum seeker now in his 41st day of hunger strike.

Omid, who was taken to Nauru hospital when he began excreting blood was temporarily returned to the detention camp yesterday. But his condition is now very serious. He told other asylum seekers, “I am waiting to die.”

“If the Minister is truly concerned with saving the lives of asylum seekers, he will intervene in Nauru to save Omid’s life and the lives of other asylum seekers condemned on Nauru,” said Ian Rintoul, from the Refugee Action Coalition.

“Amnesty International reports confirm the intolerable conditions that the Minister has created on Nauru. Left in limbo in shocking condition worse than the hell-hole created by the Howard government, Labor’s ‘no advantage’ policy has become positive victimisation of a handful of asylum seekers who arrived after 13 August.

“Chis Bowen has set an example – not to asylum seekers – but one that demonstrates the sheer inhumanity of its off-shore processing policies.”
