Refugee supporters will hold a protest outside the Brisbane Federal Circuit Court, 119 North Quay, Tuesday 26 November from 9.00am.
The protest will coincide with a 10 am hearing of the Federal Circuit Court requesting a court order to prevent the Immigration Minister removing the Rohingyan family, with new-born baby Ferouz, to Nauru.
The Immigration Minister has failed to give a guarantee that the family will not be removed, insisting that the family will be returned to Nauru “when appropriate”.
“The treatment of Ferouz and Latifar has become emblematic of the Coalition’s mistreatment of asylum seekers. People were outraged that the Minister defended separating mother and child when the baby was only four days old,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.
“The conditions on Nauru are intolerable for anyone, and completely impossible for a family with a young baby. Yet, the Minister is not just threatening to remove Latifar, her husband and their three children, but also other families including sojme with disbaled children who are being held in mainland detention centres.
“There are at least four other pregnant woman on Nauru. What possible reason can the Minister have to keep pregnant women in tents, in 40-plus degree heat, with no available running water?
“The Minister’s media blackout can’t hide the truth about Nauru. Three unaccompanied minors have been brought from Nauru to Australia in the last week.
“It is time to end the transfers to Nauru and to bring all the asylum seekers dumped there, back to Australia.”
