Refugee supporters march on Morrison’s office to oppose offshore processing

Refugee supporters will rally in Cronulla and march on the electorate office of Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, tomorrow, 12 noon, Saturday, 21 June.

The rally will begin in Monro Park (opposite the Cronulla railway station) and then march on Morrison’s electorate office.

Speakers at the rally will include, David Shoebridge (Greens MLC NSW), Genevieve Kelly, NSW state secretary NTEU, Matt Anslow (one of the Christians arrested at the prayer vigil in Scott Morrison’s office), Alexander McRae (St George/Sutherland Shire Refugee Support Group), and Afghan and other refugees.

The rally and march will call for justice for Reza Barati, and an end to offshore processing.

“It is four months since Reza Barati was killed on Manus Island and still no-one has been held to account for his brutal murder. The Cornall Inquiry was a white wash and was specifically excluded from investigating anything regarding the Minister’s role in the events on Manus, nor the reasons Morrison gave such misleading information about the brutal attack on the asylum seekers,” said Ian Rintoul.

“The High Court may have decided that the designation of Manus Island and Nauru is lawful. But that decision cannot absolve the government’s responsibility for the cruelty of offshore processing.

“In the eyes of international community and the court of public opinion, Scott Morrison is guilty of human rights abuses. The blood of Reza Barati, and the others blinded and bashed on Manus Island, is still on Morrison’s hands.

“Scott Morrison is part of a government that has imposed heartless budget cuts on pensioners and the unemployed but he is willing to spend billions to maintain the offshore detention regime, to force pregnant women and families to Nauru and to and keep men, women and children in indefinite detention on Christmas Island.

“Morrison and the Coalition government have made desperate efforts to scapegoat asylum seekers in the hope of gaining a domestic political advantage. But the death of Reza Barati has exposed the reality of the Coalition’s refugee policies. At rallies around the country this weekend, thousands of people will be calling for an end to offshore processing and for Scott Morrison to be sacked.”
