Europe is facing its biggest refugee crisis for decades, as hundreds of thousands flee the conflict in Syria and elsewhere. The images of baby Aylan Kurdi, whose body was washed ashore in Turkey, shows the cost of Fortress Europe policies and mimicking Tony Abbott’s efforts to turn back boats.
Asylum seekers entering Europe have faced barbed wire fences and riot police trying to keep them out. Many countries within the EU, such as Britain, have refused to accept a share of the refugees who are arriving. Most of them have gone to Germany. But there have also been incredible displays of solidarity from ordinary people across Europe, who have donated food and clothing and opened their homes to asylum seekers.
Tony Abbott has one again disgraced himself with his callous response to the refugees who have lost their lives, simply repeating his tired lines about the need to “stop the boats”. But this just means refugees are told to go die somewhere else. Join our snap rally to call for:
- Australian help with immediate rescue for Syrian refugees
- Increase to the refugee intake to save lives
- Don’t turn refugees back to sea
- Syrian refugees off Manus and Nauru – close the camps
