Call for all Labor MP’s to support Independent MP Andrew Wilkie’s Bill to bring all children, their families and separated family units from Nauru to Australia.
Andrew Wilkie, supported by Adam Bandt (The Greens), and Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie, has moved a bill in Parliament that, if carried, would require the government to bring all children, their families and separated family units to Australia.
This bill has a chance of success because with the election of Kerryn Phelps, the Coalition is a minority government, and there are even dissident Liberal backbenchers like Julia Banks, who would cross the floor to support the Bill.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has backed away from any commitment to bring all the children and families from Nauru to Australia before Christmas.
As of 21 November, there are still 17 children and their families as well as several fathers on Nauru separated from their partners and children in Australia. A vote in Parliament could change that.
Contact the Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten, and Opposition Immigration Minister Shayne Neumann, and your local Labor MP to demand that they support the Wilkie Bill in the next sitting of Parliament (due to start on 26 November). When you call, it’s also worth mentioning that we want to see a change to Labor’s refugee policies at their upcoming National Conference in Adelaide.
