This public forum will hear reports from recent visitors to Australia’s remote detention network. On the Easter weekend, about 60 refugee activists traveled for over two days by bus to the Curtin detention camp in remote outback WA, as more than 300 asylum seekers staged a hunger strike and sit-in. Sydney RAC members Ian Rintoul, Jemima Mowbray and Julian Gormly were there.
In a separate visit, Jo Hind from Chil-Out has inspected conditions on Christmas Island. This public forum will hear eyewitness accounts from these trips. Just what are conditions like in Australia’s remote detention camps, far from the media spotlight and community contacts possible in the metropolitan centres?
